YOUR OPINION

The annual Myanmar Academy Awards ceremony was held on December 30. Interviews by Moe Moe Oo.

BOTH men and women are interested in the Academy Awards ceremony. Not many people go out on the day of the ceremony, but rather stay at home and watch it on TV. I usually go to the cinema at least twice a month with my friends when there are good movies on, but in 2004 I only saw two films, Mystery of Snow and Tit Khar Ga Ayeyarwaddy Nya Myar (Nights on the Ayeyarwaddy River). I liked Mystery of Snow very much. The story was simple but the scenery was very beautiful. I don’t go to the awards ceremony, but I always watch it at home. I’m really curious about who will win. I predicted that Htun Eaindra Bo and Lu Min would win the awards but I was wrong. In my opinion, most of this year’s winners deserved their awards. Lwin Moe (Best Actor award) acted really well in Tit Khar Ga Ayeyarwaddy Nya Myar. Chit Chin Nge Pyaing (True Love), the movie for which Soe Myat Nandar won the Best Supporting Actress award, was also really interesting. Whether a film wins an Academy Award or not does not present me from watching it. If I think the story is good or I already know the story, I make sure I don’t miss it.

OF the 27 films that were shown in 2004, I watched almost all of them. I thought films like Chit Chin Nge Pyaing (True Love), Mystery of Snow and Pyone Cho Gyi (Smiling Guy) were great. True Love was shot in Japan and Mystery of snow was shot on a faraway ice-covered mountain. Both of them have been screened at a lot of international film festivals so I thought they would win a lot of awards. I didn’t go to the awards ceremony but I did watch it live on TV. I wish I could see it in person how the actors and actresses look off the screen. I’m a big movie fan so I always pay a lot of attention to the ceremony, especially to the clothes that the stars were. If I have to attend formal ceremonies, I can imitate their clothing or hairstyles. I think the awards ceremony is less exciting than in the past. It used to be difficult for ordinary people to guess who would win, but now most of us can predict correctly. This year my predictions were right except for Best Supporting Actor and Actress. I thought comedian Moe D would win Best Supporting Actor for Pyone Cho Gyi. Even though he is a comedian, he can play tragic roles very well and make the audience cry.

IF a movie features my favourite actor or if my favourite author writes the story, I go and see it. I thought Mystery of Snow was the most outstanding movie of 2004. It featured a lot of pleasant scenes and the actors were also very good. I thought Lwin Moe or Lu Min would win awards for that movie, but Lwin Moe won an award for another movie instead and Lu Min didn’t win an award. The Academy Awards ceremony is always fascinating to me so I watch it every year. I don’t really care about the fashions worn by the actresses, but they help people guess who will win. If an actress wears clothing that is unusual and expensive, people predict that she might win. I was really interested in Htun Eaindra Bo’s dress. Before the ceremony, she told a local journal that her dress was worth K600,000 but it looked so funny when I actually saw. I don’t mean it wasn’t beautiful, but it looked like an expensive maternity dress. My favourite actress is Htet Htet Moe Oo so I expected her to come in the most prominent outfit, but she didn’t attend the ceremony. I’m curious about who comes to the ceremony and who doesn’t.
