One of the photographs from Dr Donald Stadtner's
book on Bagan. |
J’S IRRAWADDY Dream and Bistro will hold an open house
on Friday, January 13, in its newly refurbished garden setting
to introduce writer Dr Donald Stadtner.
Dr Stadtner, an art historian, is the author of many volumes
on Myanmar’s cultural heritage.
His latest book is on ancient Bagan, “Buddhist plain of
merit” with pictures by the legendary UK photographer Michael
Freeman.
J’s Irrawaddy owner, Juliana Tan says she is holding the
event for people to meet each other and make new contacts. It
will be an informal affair with refreshments on the house and
a performance of 1950s popular hits on Myanmar slide guitar, courtesy
of the Gitameit Music Centre.
Dr Stadtner was an Associate Professor of Art History and Asian
Studies for many years at the University of Texas in the US. He
is also a Smithsonian grant recipient and a Fullbright scholar.
In addition to his books on Myanmar, he has written extensively
on the art of north Indian.
He now divides his time between San Francisco and Southeast
Asia.
His latest book, which he will talk about on December 13, is the
ultimate guide to the ancient city of Bagan and its history and
culture.
Quotes in the book from old stone inscriptions give a fascinating
glimpse into the life of the people of the First Myanmar Empire
founded by King Anawrahta.
The book covers not only history but also contains valuable comments
on architecture, painting and sculpture.
The more notable temples have each been given their own section,
with a note at the beginning of each section as what exactly to
look out for in that particular temple.
A detailed explanation follows as to the temple’s interesting
points in terms of artwork or architectural design, as well as
to the styles of the various images.
With this book in hand, one could seek out what is unique in each
temple and not just see them all as one brick monument after the
other. It is perhaps most useful if read before you actually get
to Bagan as it will equip you with the tools to understand what
you are seeing and save you precious time.
But those who have already visited Bagan will also find it interesting
as it helps you see what you have already experienced in a new
light. It may even entice you to visit the area again to take
a second look.
The book is not only informative, though, it is also immensely
appealing visually.
Master photographer Michael Freeman’s pictures literally
lure you into the book, and what starts as a cursory glance usually
turns into a close study of each captivating shot, whenever anyone
picks up the book.
Freeman has published many books of his photographs, including
The Spirit of Asia, Japan Modern and the most recent, a book on
the Sudan.
He has also published over 30 books on photography, including
the Complete Guide to Digital Photography, the Michael Freeman
Digital Photography Expert series (now 6 volumes), and The Pro
Digital Photographer’s Handbook.
Copies of Ancient Bagan — Buddhist Plain of Merit can
be purchased at J’s Irrawaddy on the night, but people who
have already purchased their copy of the book are also encouraged
to bring it along for Dr Stadtner to sign.
