Born on February 5, 1963, in Dukahtaung village, Myitkyina District, Kachin State, Sumlut Gun Maw is the eldest of five siblings. He completed his secondary education at No. 1 Basic Education High School in Myitkyina in 1979. He then pursued higher education at Myitkyina Regional College and later earned a Bachelor of Science in Physics from Mandalay University in 1987.
