How to Get Around Myanmar

Traveling around Myanmar is an adventure in itself, with several transportation options ranging from local buses to domestic flights. Depending on your schedule, budget, and comfort preference, there’s a way to explore Myanmar that suits every traveler.

1. Domestic Flights

  • The fastest and most convenient way to cover long distances, especially between cities like Yangon, Mandalay, Bagan, and Heho (for Inle Lake).

  • Several local airlines operate daily flights. Always reconfirm your flight times, as schedules may change.

2. Long-Distance Buses

  • Budget-friendly and fairly comfortable.

  • VIP and express buses with reclining seats run between major cities (Yangon, Bagan, Mandalay, Inle Lake) and are popular with tourists.

  • Overnight buses are common for longer journeys but bring a sweater — buses can be very cold due to air-conditioning.

3. Trains

  • Myanmar’s rail system offers scenic but slow journeys. Great for adventurous travelers who want to experience local life.

  • Routes like Yangon to Mandalay and the famous Goteik Viaduct crossing are popular among tourists.

  • Expect delays and basic facilities.

4. Taxis and Ride-Hailing Apps

  • Taxis are common in major cities like Yangon and Mandalay. Always agree on the fare before starting the ride (meters are rare).

  • In Yangon, ride-hailing apps like Grab are widely used for safer and more transparent pricing.

5. Private Cars and Drivers

  • Hiring a private car with a driver is a comfortable way to explore Myanmar, especially for custom itineraries or remote areas.

  • Available through hotels, travel agencies, or online booking services.

6. Motorbikes and Bicycles

  • Renting a bicycle or electric scooter is a fun way to explore places like Bagan or Inle Lake at your own pace.

  • Motorbike rentals are more common in smaller towns, but foreigners are not allowed to drive motorbikes in Yangon.

7. Boats and Ferries

  • In regions like Inle Lake, Mandalay, and the Irrawaddy River, boat travel is scenic and enjoyable.

  • River cruises between Mandalay and Bagan offer a relaxing way to see the countryside.

Quick Tip:
➡️ Book flights and VIP buses in advance during peak season (November to February).
➡️ Always carry small cash for local transport fares.
