Tianjin, China – August 31 (IANS): Prime Minister Narendra Modi held talks with Myanmar’s State Security and Peace Commission Chairman, Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in Tianjin on Sunday. The meeting focused on reviewing India-Myanmar relations and exploring future avenues of cooperation.

PM Modi reaffirmed India’s commitment to supporting Myanmar’s developmental needs, emphasizing that Myanmar remains a key partner in India’s Neighbourhood First, Act East, and Indo-Pacific strategies.

According to Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, the leaders discussed a wide range of issues, including trade, development partnership, defence and security, and border management. PM Modi reiterated that India is ready to work closely with Myanmar in these areas.

The Prime Minister also underlined India’s support for a Myanmar-led and Myanmar-owned peace process, urging all stakeholders to engage in inclusive dialogue ahead of the country’s forthcoming elections. He noted that fair and participatory polls would contribute significantly to Myanmar’s stability.

The MEA statement added that PM Modi stressed the importance of completing ongoing connectivity projects, which would enhance people-to-people exchanges and strengthen regional integration under India’s Act East Policy.

This was the first bilateral meeting between PM Modi and Senior General Min Aung Hlaing since Modi assumed office for a third term. The two leaders had previously met at the BIMSTEC Summit in Bangkok in April.

Earlier in the day, PM Modi also met Chinese President Xi Jinping in Tianjin, where both leaders agreed on the need to maintain peace and tranquillity along the India-China border. They reaffirmed their commitment to cooperation based on mutual respect, mutual interest, and mutual sensitivity.

In a post on X, PM Modi wrote: “Had a fruitful meeting with President Xi Jinping in Tianjin on the sidelines of the SCO Summit. We reviewed the positive momentum in India-China relations since our last meeting in Kazan. We agreed on the importance of maintaining peace and tranquillity in border areas and reaffirmed our commitment to cooperation based on mutual respect, mutual interest, and mutual sensitivity.”

Additionally, PM Modi met Cai Qi, member of the Politburo Standing Committee, to discuss ways to expand economic, political, and cultural exchanges between India and China.

PM Modi arrived in Tianjin on Saturday after concluding his visit to Japan. He was welcomed warmly at the Binhai International Airport ahead of the two-day SCO Summit.
