PM Modi, Myanmar’s Min Aung Hlaing Discuss Bilateral Cooperation at SCO Summit
Tianjin, China — Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, Chairman of Myanmar’s State Administration Council and State Security and Peace Commission, on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in Tianjin on Sunday. The meeting focused on reviewing India-Myanmar bilateral relations and exploring new areas for cooperation.
According to a statement shared by India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), the two leaders discussed a wide range of topics including trade, development partnership, defence and security, and border management.
PM Modi emphasized India’s commitment to supporting Myanmar’s developmental needs and reaffirmed the country’s engagement through its Neighbourhood First, Act East, and Indo-Pacific strategies.
“PM Narendra Modi met with Senior General Min Aung Hlaing… The leaders reviewed India-Myanmar ties and discussed the way forward on several aspects of bilateral cooperation,” MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal posted on X (formerly Twitter).
PM Modi also expressed hope that upcoming elections in Myanmar would be held in a fair and inclusive manner, involving all stakeholders. He reiterated India’s support for a Myanmar-led and Myanmar-owned peace process, highlighting the importance of dialogue and consultation.
On regional connectivity, the Indian Prime Minister stressed the importance of ongoing infrastructure and connectivity projects, noting that these would enhance people-to-people ties and strengthen regional cooperation, in line with India’s Act East Policy.
This meeting marked the first formal bilateral interaction between the two leaders since PM Modi began his third term in office. Their previous encounter took place during the BIMSTEC Summit in Bangkok in April.
