History of Sittwe

Sittwe’s history dates back centuries, closely tied to the ancient Kingdom of Arakan (Rakhine). Buddhism flourished in the area, leaving behind numerous religious monuments and cultural traditions.

During the British colonial period in the 19th century, Sittwe—then known as Akyab—became an important administrative and trading port. The British developed infrastructure, ports, and administrative buildings, some of which still remain today.

After Myanmar’s independence in 1948, Sittwe became the capital of Rakhine State. Despite periods of political and economic challenges, the city remains a vital cultural and administrative center and continues to preserve its Rakhine identity and traditions.
