Zaw Zaw is a prominent Burmese businessman and the founder of Max Myanmar Group, one of Myanmar’s largest and most diversified conglomerates. His entrepreneurial journey is marked by significant achievements in various industries, including construction, banking, hospitality, and energy.

Early Life and Career

Born in 1964 in the Irrawaddy Division of Myanmar, Zaw Zaw’s early life was marked by ambition and resilience. In the early 1990s, he moved to Japan, where he worked multiple jobs, including as a cook, dishwasher, and waiter. During this time, he learned Japanese and developed a keen business acumen. In 1993, he founded Max Myanmar, initially focusing on exporting used Japanese cars to Myanmar. He capitalized on a Burmese law that allowed citizens living abroad to import one car, purchasing import permits on the black market to expand his business .

Max Myanmar Group

Established in 1993, Max Myanmar Group has grown into a major holding company with interests spanning construction, banking, hospitality, manufacturing, and energy. The group owns Ayeyarwady Bank, one of Myanmar’s largest financial institutions, and has been involved in significant infrastructure projects, including the construction of Naypyidaw, the country’s new capital city .

Philanthropy and Social Responsibility

In 2010, Zaw Zaw founded the Ayeyarwady Foundation, focusing on education, healthcare, and community development. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the foundation played a pivotal role by establishing treatment centers, providing medical supplies, and supporting healthcare workers. Zaw Zaw personally contributed $15 million to these efforts .

Football Leadership

Since 2005, Zaw Zaw has served as the president of the Myanmar Football Federation (MFF) and is a vice-president of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC). Under his leadership, Myanmar’s national football teams have achieved notable successes, including qualifying for the 2015 FIFA U-20 World Cup. He has also been instrumental in promoting women’s and youth football in the country .
